BC Eagles Hope To Soar Into Post Season Bowl Bid

The BC Eagles are hard at work getting ready for the 2015 football campaign. BC is blessed with a young eager squad trying to qualify for a 2015 Bowl bid. The Eagles are 13-11 in Bowl appearances dating back to their first Bowl victory in a win over Tennessee. Since then the Eagles rank 31st in the country in Bowl appearances. The two most recent  a loss last year to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl and a 2013 loss in the Indeendence Bowl to Arizona Wildcats.  BC’s strengths and weaknesses . Their strengths are a strong front seven on defense.led by MLB  Steven Daniels. Daniels a senior led the team with seventy two  tackles last year. The Eagles schedule of Duke and Wake Forrest will be their big test The odds makers haves FSU with Miami 10-1 and Georgia Tech 4-1.The safe bet is BC going 6-6 The worst case scenario is BC winning three games.

BC weaknesses are it’s inexperienced offense. The Eagles have sophmore  quarterback Darius Wade taking over in place of graduated Tyler Murphy. Wade is  a gifted  quarterback with  a strong throwing arm and two talented receivers in tight end Dan Crimmons who led the team with 25 catches for just over three hundred yards. Overall BC ranked second in the nation in 2014 rushing. Another talented receiver Wade has to throw to is wide receiver Phil Steele.. Backing up Wade in case of injury the Eagles have three freshman. John Fadule, Troy Flutie, and Jeff Smith. Also the Eagles have a very young offensive line. The backfield is well stocked with returning upper classman Johnathan Hilliman.

The 2015 season should be a big challenge for head coach Steve Addazio  and his coaching staff. With a young quarterback to work with the offense is work in progress. Look for BC to go five hundred at 6-6 in the grueling ACC conference. But with a proud football tradition at  BCthe Eagles will meet the challenge head on.

Have Red Sox Fans Seen Koji Uhera Pitch His Last Game In A Red Sox Uniform?

Red Sox fans can expect to see an entirely different roster in 2016 than 2015. At least pitching wise. Position wise the Sox have a young group of talented players that are ready to contribute. This leads us to the next question. What are the Red Sox plans for Koji Uhera? At forty years of age and an eighteen million dollarprice tag one would think not to many. But be realistic Uehara is signed through the 2016 season.

Free agency wise theirs not to much available. The Phillies sent Johnathan Paplebon packing. That tells you that teams aren’t going to keep an aging veteran for a hefty price tag. It’s cheaper and more productive to keep the farm system upgraded. Rebuilding or tweaking is a more inexpensive way to operate. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll win. Last week Uehara was hit by a fierce line drive on the back of his hand in a game against the Detroit Tigers. It was the last play of the game and Uehara was in fierce pain. Despite the pain he managed to field the ground ball and throw out the runner to win the game.

So where does this leave the Sox. The Sox placed Uehars on the disabled list for the season and sent him home.Should the Sox gamble and keep him around for another year? Productivity wise Uehara was having a very successful season. Uehars has compiled twenty five saves and was keeping the Soxseason competitive even though they have a losing record. But since last week no one has answered the call. Junicini Tazawa whose normally a setup man has been thrown into the mix but has failed in five attempts. Newly signed Jean Machi from the Giants hasn’t done well either.

So this does not leave the Sox with many options. With no help in Pawtucket or Portland and a slim free agent market the Sox could be responsible for Uehars for another year or at least til something comes via of a trade in the off season. But in reality having a guy like Koji Uehara  is a good thing. No matter how old or what his contract status is you  know what your getting from Koji Uehara night in and night out .

Brady Saga Could Be The Fuel That Sends The Pats Back To The Super Bowl

The Tom Brady saga continues to move along at a rapid pace. Wednesday is the day that Tom Brady and his lawyers meet with league commissioner Roger Goodell and begin the so called deflate gate issue. The next day Thursday is the first pre season game for the Pats. Thursday the Patriots begin their quest for Super Bowl number five. It’s also the first time the Pats willl be without the services of Tom Brady at the helm

But it’s adversities such as these that makes the Patriots so good. No matter what the issue is weather an injury to a key player or a big play the Pats learn to overcome their obstacles. This is what separates the Patriots from the rest of the league. Their motto Do Your Job is well known all overr New England. The rule applies to everyone who wears a Patriot uniform even Tom Brady.Patriot head coach seems to find a way to win. If its an injury issue he finds players off the street to come in and contribute.

Such was the case after the “07 season. After that successful season head coach Bill Belichick was accused ofspying on opposing teams. This case was  known as the infamous Spy Gate issue. Belichick was forced to pay a heavy fine. But these accusations don’t sop the Pats from winning in fifteen years under Brady they’ve dominated the AFC East The Patriots are one of the best coached and well focused teams in all of sports

In Thursday’s game against Green Bay the Pats will start second year man Jimmy Garoppolo against the Packers. Garoppolo was the teams second round pick of a year ago. Garoppolo saw limited action last year but when he did play he fared fairly well. With Brady tied up in court Garoppolo will get the bulk of the snaps. Veteran journeyman Matt Flynn was signed in the off season. Flynn should see plenty of action to. By playing Garoppolo this will make him gain his confidence and get the offense more comfortable with him. Its cases like this that makes the Patriots so well prepared.

The deflate gate issue  could work in in the Patriots favor. With all the negative press the team has received since the AFC title game back in January deflate gate is a perfect example of how the Patriots react in overcoming distractions. Eventually the Brady case will be resolved. When it does Brady will have this problem behind him and ready to move on. When the time does come for Brady to focus on football again time will tell if Super Bowl number five is reach.

Lucchino Leaves Behind A Legacy Of Success And Failures

The news coming out of Fenway Park Saturday that Red Sox president Larry Lucchino has stepped down only goes to show people that their is never a dull moment in Boston Sports After a long reign of being Red Sox President the Sox named Sam Kennedy as president. Kennedy has worked under Lucchino since college.

With the changing of the guard Lucchino leaves behind a legacy of both successand failure. The “04 red sox or so called idiots broke one of the longest droughts in baseball history defeating St.Louis to brake the curse of the bambino Since then the Sox have won  two more one in “07 and the last one in2013. The Sox however can not get consistent after coming off success They.ve finished in last place three out of four years since 2011.Also in 2011 the Sox were one of the hottest teams in baseball only to fall out of first place and tumble towards the bottom. That was the end of long time manager and fan favorite Terry Francona. Also  in 2011 marked the end of Sox GM Theo Epstein who was one of the reasons for the Sox success..Lucchino was responsible for the hiring of incompetent Bobby Valentine. The Sox finished dead last in 2012 only to see the Sox dismiss Valentine.

Lucchino is also getting heat for not resigning veteran and world series hero John Lester. Lester bolted to the Cubs to pitch for Theo Epstein. The Red Sox also made one of the biggest trades in history in 2012 when they unloaded non productive veteran Carl Crawford to the Dodgers. That move alone left the Red Sox with a boatload of cash. But the excess cash has proven little results.  In 2013 the Sox regained their world championship status. They had great role players such as Shane victorino, Mike Napoli and of course John Lester. Lester got traded to the A’s late last summer as the Sox began dumping long term contracts. In 2013 the Sox signed free agents Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. The two have not fared well and have come under heavy fire.

Lucchino on the other hand did a great job at reuniting ex Red Sox players back to Fenway Park for a reunion. This week the Sox retired Pedro Martinez’s number . Other players such as Fred Lynn Manny Ramirez and Rick Burleson returned to Boston for a visit. This does show that Lucchino does not forget about players who bought success back to Boston. Lucchino also did a great job at reconstructing Fenway and making it more attractive for players and future free agents. Fenway is one of the nicest and well kept ballparks in baseball.

No matter what people think of Larry Lucchino as an owner one thing is for certain Lucchino gave us three world titles. No other Red Sox executive has done that. Lucchino leaves as a winner. The Sox will eventually turn things around. But one thing remains for sure Lucchino was one of the reasons the Sox broke the curse of the bambino.

Belichick and Company Ready to Get Back to Work

Wednesday July 31st is the first day of training camp for the Patriots and NFL teams. The 2015 Super Bowl champs begin their quest for super bowl number five. Wednesday is the first day of practice for both veterans and rookies. Weather despite the deflate gate issue  it will   be business as usual in Foxborough.

The quest for Super Bowl number five won’t be easy. Teams in the grueling NFL  only got better by adding and deducting players through the draft and free agency. In the AFC east for example where the Patriots have dominated for twelve years the competition got pretty stiff. Buffalo is probably the team that could challenge the Pats for first place and possibly a shot at the AFC wild card. The Bills signed former Jet head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan signed a multi year deal in hopes of taking the 9-7 Bills to the next level. Buffalos defense is one of the best in the NFC . On offense the Bills have one of the best young receivers in the league in Sammy Wadkins. Wadkins will have help on the other side with the signing of receiver Percy Harvin. Harvin and Wadkins   will be one of the potent receiving combinations in the league. Also the Bills signed ex Chief and Patriot quarterback Matt Cassell to add depth in case injury to EJ Manuel. The Dolphins on the other hand are also not a team to be taken lightly. The 8-8 Dolphins were busy this off season by signing former Lion All Pro Ndamukong Suh to bolster the defensive line. On offense the Dolphins added exBronco Knowshon Moreno to to the back fieldand signed wide receiver Kenny Stills to the mix.Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is getting betting each year. Miamis main concern is the health of offensive lineman Brandon Alberts. Alberts has missed several games the past couple f seasons due to injury. This brings us to the Jets The 4-12 Jets got better by signing ex Pat and All Pro corner Darrelle Revis. Revis made the Pats Defensive backfield  very intimidating to NFL quarterbacks. Revis one of the main reasons the Pats went to the Super Bowl; Revis will team up with opposite corner Warren Cromartie to make the Jets a serious threat to qualify for a wild card shot. The Jets only issue is at quarterback where Geno Smith is not fully proven. If Smith fails veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick can fill in. Sources from the Jets say its Smiths job to lose  how he performs is up to him.

The Patriots however also got better. Despite what happens with the deflate gate issue and the quarterback situation he Pats are in decent shape. The Pats defense despite the loss of Revis is still one of the best in football.Number onedraft pick Malcom Brown out of Texas is expected to fill in for the departed Vince WilforkKicker Stephen Gostowski signed a long term deal. Gostowskis booming kickoffs and clutch kicks make him one of the best in the game. If tight end Rob Gronkowski can stay healthy and the outcome of  deflate gate theirs  no reason the Pats can return to the Super Bowl.

in New England Same Old Story How Long Til Training Camp?

With the 2015 baseball season a failure in New England sports fans ask the usual question this time of year. How long til training camp. The answer is one week from tomorrow the 24th. With one week to go before veterans and rookies report to training camp. That’s the type of summer it’s been in 2015. The Red Sox are dead last in the AL East and one of the worst teams in baseball.

But even though the Patriots are Super Bowl champs all is not perfect in Foxborough. The famous deflate gate case may come to a settlement as early as Friday the 24th. It is rumored that Brady and his lawyer Jeff Kessell may agree on a four game fine. With training camp a week away many people feel that head coach Bill Belicheck is influencing Brady to return. If Brady does hold out and decides to fight this in court the Pats only have two quarterbacks in camp. Second year man Jimmy Garoppolo has been rumored to be Brady’s successor. But Garoppolo is not even close to being ready. The Pats also signed free agent journeyman Matt Flynn off waivers earlier this summer. But neither of the two even comes close as to what Brady brings to the table.

With training camp a week a way the Pats have plenty of work to do to fill in holes created by the departures of All Pro cornerback  Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Revis was a threat to many quaterbacks and was the first shut down corner the Pats have had in quite some time. Browner also leaves a big hole at the other side. Browner brought physical presence to the Pats backfield but was often flagged for several holding violations.

The Pats however are in very good shape otherwise. Earlier in the week the Pats signed All Pro kicker Stephen Gostowski to a multi year contract. Gostowski has been a great clutch kicke and is noted for his kickoffs going deep into the endzone forcing the opposition to start at the twenty. Overall the Pats had a very successful 2015 draft. The Pats drafted a total of ten players seven on defense and three offensive lineman.

Free agency the Pats also had a successful year. The Pats signed former Buffalo tight end ScottChandler as a depth move in case of injury to Rob Gronkowski. Also the Pats signed linebacker Jabal Sheard from Cleveland to bolster the pass rush..Running back Tavaris Cadet was signed from New Orleans and free agent wide receivers Kevin Dorsey and Brandon Gibson strengthen the receiving corps.

At least Pats fans have something to look forward to for the next several months. The Pats won their fourth Superbowl last February against the Sea hawks.Malcom Butlers interception will be remembered for years to come.

At the All Star Break Sox Nothing But Pretenders

With the midsummer classic on and young arms showing their stuff don’t get to excited about our home town team the Red Sox. At 42-47 the Sox are mere pretenders in a division of weak talent. The Yankees certainly don’t have the pitching to last all the way til October and the Orioles lack depth and bullpen help to make a serious run. This leads us to the Sox. Sure they’re giving us a little tease only to be disappointed come October 1st. Why/ they just don’t have the talent all the way around to be taken seriously. Buchholz is being Buchholz going on the DL.Ortiz is being Ortiz being a whiner over whose going to be the full time DH. The truth of the matter is Hanley Ramierez is much more comfortable at the plate. Ortiz has been struggling right up til now. Ramerez is younger and quicker than Ortiz.

True Ortiz did deliver three world titles to Boston. But a lot of times over the years Ortiz has been selfish while whining and crying about how things are and how things used to be. The truth is the public cares about one thing how the team is playing lately. This years team with the exception of late has been struggling since the get go. The team looks confused and at times like a team that doesn’t like each other. Players such as Wade Miley went nuts in the dugout and got in a shouting match with manager John Farrell.

Incidents like these certainly don’t build character nor do they show it. The Sox have a pretty good nucleus of young talent on the way up. This team will only get better. Eduardo Rodriguez is one of the best arms in the game and is 5-2. Outfielder Mokkie Betts is one of baseball’s top fifty players with Xander Bogaerts not far behind. What ever the future holds for the Sox remains to be seen. But this years team is certainly not one to be taken seriously.

Will the Brady Hearing Affect the Fantasy Football Industry?

Now that the Tom Brady deflate gate hearing is officially underway the next question is will this affect the 30 million dollar fantasy football industry?Like the NFL  fantasy football junkies hold an annual fantasy football  once a year draft. Here fantasy football gurus and fans participate  in a once a year draft. But one has  to wonder if this scandal will affect loyal Brady followers? Granted it’s only fantasy but Tom Brady is Tom Brady. By playing fantasy football one can engage in a dream of what it’s like to be an NFL GM.

By drafting players and cutting players fans can and with some luck win some money if their successful. This is where the Brady loyalty comes into factor. Aside from being just a fantasy Tom Brady is one of the top three quarterbacks to play the game. Even in fantasy Brady remains a loyal pick or draft. Performing in fantasy is no real life situation but a dream. This hearing will certainly have an impact this year.

By Brady facing a four game suspension one has to wonder how long this whole process will take. This is only the hearing. If this goes to Federal trial this could stretch well into or possibly over a year. This is where fans loyalty come into play. Currently the Pats have two backup quarterbacks on their roster. Second year man Jimmy Garoppolo and recently acquired backup NFL journeyman Matt Flynn. One doesn’t even know if their good enough to be on an NFL roster. Certainly fantasy players won’t go with an untested Garoppoko and Flynn at best is a backup.

If Goodell buckles under and reduces the suspension to one game that will be one game without the best quarterback in the NFL will hurt the outcome of that particular week. This leads us to the next issue Brady is going to fight this to the finish. He wants his squeaky clean image back. How can you blame him Goodell is challenging him on his text messages and not turning over his cell phone. This is not a criminal case but a league violation. As far as Brady is concerned it’s either no games or nothing at all and a major apology’

It should be a very interesting summer as the two sides try to come to an accord. With the fantasy football draft usually held in August that won’t be even near enough time with pre season well underway. But make no mistake about it Brady is not playing fantasy football he’s playing for his reputation and image restored. One has to roll the dice on this one either the best quarterback in football in court or a journeyman backup who still has to make the roster?

Why the Bruins Need to be Defensive Minded in Upcoming 2015 NHL Draft

With the 2015 NHL draft only two weeks away the Boston Bruins need to be on the defensive side of the draft. First of all the Bruins have a decent core of young defensemen on the roster. Dave Warsofsky,Kevan Miller, Torrey Krug and Dougie Hamilton are in their early twenties.Unlike Dennis Seidenberg and Zedeno Chara these kids can rack up the minutes if needed. Krufg for example is excellent on the power play and has taken advantage of his playing time in the playoffs by being very productive especially on the power play.

In 2011 the Bruins selected defenseman Dougie Hamilton as their number one choice. Hamilton already after four years is one of the best defenseman in the league. In four years Hamilton has 22 goals 61 assist and a total of 178 points. He’s also on the most reliable players on the team.Veteran Adam McQuaid is still  one of the most dependable Bruins but he to has injury problems and has missed several games in the past couple of year

Top rated defenseman in this years draft are Jakub Zboril of the Saint Joh SeaDogs. The veteran Czech Republic defenseman  is  probably one of the top three to come out this year. He isnoted for his strong power play presence. This is something the Bruins have sorely lacked the past couple of seasons. College  prospect ZachWbrenski is one of the top college players ranked this year. He’s noted for his offensive skills and piling up lots of minutes. Also listed high isOliver Kylington   off Sweeden.Kylington is noted for his two way play.Another solid prospect to keep an eye on is Boston College defenseman Noah Hanifan. Hanifan isa local product who captained team USA under 17 team.Hanifan finished the year with 23 pints third in the nation for defenseman. Hanifan played high school hockey for St. Sebastions and the Cape Cod league.

With the Bruins picking realitively lower than usual  in  this  years defense  could be the way the Bruins go.The Bruins have one of the weakest power plays in the NHL.With an aging Chara and Seidenberg the B’s need speed and youth to keep up with the Black Hawks and Lighting and Ducks.Speed and intelligent play seem to be the norm now in the NHL if you want to go deep in the playoffs. With head coach Claude Julian being retained for a ninth year a solid draft is one thing that will keep him on a long leash.

Sox Need To Find Their Winning Ways of Old

With the 2015 season almost halfway through the RedSox need to get back to their winning ways of “04 “07 and”13. They did this by sound fundamental baseball. A lot of hit and run and patient at bats. This team is putting to much pressure on itself and floundering around last place to common.

The teams of it’s championship years had great role players such as Mike Timlin and Johnny Damon. Players like these new their roles and executed them well. Players like Dave Roberts, Trot Nixon and Bill Mueller had patient at bats and delivered timely hits when it mattered most. This team lacks both character and identity. One example is patients at the plate. Mike Napoli for example who is hot of late was getting teased to much by low outside pitches way out of the strike zone.

Pitching wise the Sox have been getting better starts out of Clay Buchholz,Wade Miley and rookie Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez has pitched two gems against the Twins and Rangers of late going eight innings in each start and gaining a shutout. Buchholz has seemed to find a groove and has pitched six quality starts. The only one struggling is Joe Kelly who has some location issues. Bullpen wise the Sox are in good shape with Junichi Tazawa, and Koji Uehara.Uehara has struggled with a blown save and a loss against Texas his first back to back blown save and loss as a Red Sox.

Manager John Farrell has been on the hot seat of late with the Boston media. Recently Farrell has benched struggling Dave Ortiz 220 and six homers. Also third baseman Pablo Sandoval has committed two crucial errors which caused the Sox a loss recently. Sandoval signed a long term lucrative contract as a free agent over the winter General manager Ben Cherrington has let it be known he is in no rush to shake up the ball club with any major trades.

With plenty of time left the Sox need to go back to fundamental baseball. Like their championship years when Johnny Damon gave them good at bats and Pedro dominated the league. The Sox may have no Pedro anymore but certainly have a decent enough pitching staff to compete for a playoff spot in the weak ALeast. With almost a hundred games left the Sox have no where to look but up. Three years of last place is a little to painful for any sports fan to tolerate.
