Lucchino Leaves Behind A Legacy Of Success And Failures

The news coming out of Fenway Park Saturday that Red Sox president Larry Lucchino has stepped down only goes to show people that their is never a dull moment in Boston Sports After a long reign of being Red Sox President the Sox named Sam Kennedy as president. Kennedy has worked under Lucchino since college.

With the changing of the guard Lucchino leaves behind a legacy of both successand failure. The “04 red sox or so called idiots broke one of the longest droughts in baseball history defeating St.Louis to brake the curse of the bambino Since then the Sox have won  two more one in “07 and the last one in2013. The Sox however can not get consistent after coming off success They.ve finished in last place three out of four years since 2011.Also in 2011 the Sox were one of the hottest teams in baseball only to fall out of first place and tumble towards the bottom. That was the end of long time manager and fan favorite Terry Francona. Also  in 2011 marked the end of Sox GM Theo Epstein who was one of the reasons for the Sox success..Lucchino was responsible for the hiring of incompetent Bobby Valentine. The Sox finished dead last in 2012 only to see the Sox dismiss Valentine.

Lucchino is also getting heat for not resigning veteran and world series hero John Lester. Lester bolted to the Cubs to pitch for Theo Epstein. The Red Sox also made one of the biggest trades in history in 2012 when they unloaded non productive veteran Carl Crawford to the Dodgers. That move alone left the Red Sox with a boatload of cash. But the excess cash has proven little results.  In 2013 the Sox regained their world championship status. They had great role players such as Shane victorino, Mike Napoli and of course John Lester. Lester got traded to the A’s late last summer as the Sox began dumping long term contracts. In 2013 the Sox signed free agents Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. The two have not fared well and have come under heavy fire.

Lucchino on the other hand did a great job at reuniting ex Red Sox players back to Fenway Park for a reunion. This week the Sox retired Pedro Martinez’s number . Other players such as Fred Lynn Manny Ramirez and Rick Burleson returned to Boston for a visit. This does show that Lucchino does not forget about players who bought success back to Boston. Lucchino also did a great job at reconstructing Fenway and making it more attractive for players and future free agents. Fenway is one of the nicest and well kept ballparks in baseball.

No matter what people think of Larry Lucchino as an owner one thing is for certain Lucchino gave us three world titles. No other Red Sox executive has done that. Lucchino leaves as a winner. The Sox will eventually turn things around. But one thing remains for sure Lucchino was one of the reasons the Sox broke the curse of the bambino.
