Grading the Red Sox Off Season

If Red Sox manager John Farrell were to pencil in his 2015 opening day roster it would look like this . Leading off Shane victorino, hitting second Dustin pedroia third Pablo Sandoval fourth David Ortiz fifth left fielder Hanley Ramierez sixth first baseman Mike Napoli seventh shortstop Xander  Bogarts  8th center fielder Mookie Betts/Rusney Castillo and ninth catcher Christian Vazquez. On paper this team is much better with more power. Sandoval can protect Ortiz in the third spot. How they play together and execute on the field is the question. The Sox did manage to solidify the left side of the infield. How good defensively Sandoval is remains to be seen. But he is a huge upgrade over Will Middlebrooks. Injury plagued Hanley Ramierez needs to stay healthy. That leads us to the pitching. The Sox have a host of number three starters in Wade Miley,Clay Bucholz, Joe Kelly,Justin Masterson and Ricky Porcello. Out of the bunch Porcello seems to be the number one starter if a deal or two doesn’t get done soon. The latest talk the Sox are wooing are Kansa City ace James Shields and Philly lefty Cole Hamels. Hamels would cost the Sox dearly. Their best option would be to sign Shields. Shields is no  Lester but he maybe the next best option. Without a solid number one starter the Sox would have to wait and see till July 31st to see how serious of a contender they are.
