W ith the 2014/15 hot stove season about to begin Red Sox general manager has many decisions to make and roughly two and a half months to make them Many decisions need to be dealt with first is the starting pitching. The 2014 group finished up with Claybucholz, Allen Webster, Ruby Del la Rosa and Anthony Ranudo, and Joe Kelly. But clearly this group needs an ace. The first name that comes to mind is former Sox ace John Lester. The 30 yr.old was dealt to the A’s on the last day of July. The Sox have had some discussion with Lester and his agent. It is unlikely that the Sox would give him both the money and years. The Cubs are his most logical option and Theo Epstein knows him very well. That leaves James Shields 33 yrs old and a 3.27 era in 227 innings. Max Scherzer seems to be the best of the bunch 30 yrs old and 3.08 era. The most sensible thing for the Sox is to trade for Phillies lefty Cole Hamels. Hamels is 30 yrs old and durable Relief David Robertson is the best available relief pitcher. He would make the most sense for the Sox and Philly southpaw Cole Hamel. Offensively third base has to be addressed. Will Middlebrooks decision not to play winter ball may have been his ticket out of town. Giant superstar Pablo Sandoval is thirty years old and socked thirty home runs in 2014. He would not come cheaply but hes a left handed bat can hit in front of Ortiz. A lefthanded bat was one thing the Sox sorely missed last year. The Sox traded away eighty percent of the opening day lineup.Rookies Xander Bogarts is establishing himself at shortstop. Mookie Betts maybe the opening day centerfielder depending on where late signing Rusney Castillo fits. Right fielder Shane Victorino is coming off surgery and should resume his right field duty.Catching wise David Ross has opted for freeagency Rookie Christian Vasquez had a solid rookie campaign . Fifty five games and a 240 avg. Pawtucket catcher Blake Swihart should be ready. If not the Sox may make a bid for free agent Russell Martin.Spending money wisely will be the trick this season for GM Cherrington. Mortgaging a future o0f young pitchers Henry Owens and Brian Johnson would be risky. The Sox need a lot but how they spend their money and where is the question.
