The Red Sox dipped into the international market today by signing 27 year old Cuban defector Rusney Castillo. Castillo signed a seven year 70 million dollar deal. Castillo is expected to join the big club as early as this season. Part of the dealwas to include this season as part of the contract. Castillo is one a flux of Cuban players to join the majors. Recent ones include Jose Abreu and Yasiel Puig. Castillo joins fellow Cuban Yoenis Cespedes. The signing of Castillo creates a logjam of out fielders that now includes Danny Nava, Jackie Bradley, Mookie Betts, Shane Victorino currently on the DLand Allan Craig. Weather the Sox cut either Victorino or Craig loose its seems unlikely that both will be back. Victorino has been injured most of the season which will diminish his value. Craig seems the logical one to be in right field next year.Bradley and Betts don’t offer the offensive potential that Castillo has. Castillo is also versatile who can play some infield. Now with the signing of Castillo the Red Sox have a bobnafied player who can replace Ellsbury. This is the first of many moves that general manager Ben Cherrington needs to make this offseason. This signing shows that the Red Sox are acting like a big market team. The off season should prove to be one of the busiest off seasons in years.
