Broncos And Panthers Two Evenly Matched Teams

With Super Bowl Fifty Some seventy Two Hours Away it’s safe to say thatboth teams are evenly matched. Weather it’s Peyton Manning’s leadership or Cam Newton’s  personality it should be a very close game.

This is why the Bronco’s have the edge. Their stellar defense is the reason the Patriots are sitting at home watching Super Bowl fifty instead of participating in. The Bronco defense simply beat up on the Pat’s. Tom Brady was sacked for a record of twenty times. Linebacker Von Miller was allover the field and defensive end DeMarcus Ware played an exceptional game. Defenders Chris Harris and Aquib Talib simply shut down Julian Edleman and Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski made it interesting late in the fourth quarter with a touchdown  only to come up short on the two point conversion.

It boils down to the same old  theory defense wins champions hips and  that’s just what the Broncos have. Carolina on the other hand is not battle tested. Their last Super Bowl appearance was against the Patriots in which the Pat’s won. Since then they’ve been a franchise trying to seek an identity and that’s what Cam Newton a sense of identity and purpose. They certainly showed that this year going 15-1 and beating the Seahawks in the NFC playoffs.

Weather they show their identity Sunday remains to be see. Dever and Peyton Manning have Been their four times. Carolina certainly has a talented team especially on defense. Linebacker Luke Kuechly is multi talented he’s not only one of the leagues best pass rushers but one of the best coverage linebackers also. So is his counterpart Thomas Davis together the two had the best pass rush in the league last season.

Overall Denver is the more balanced and experienced team. They have a good ground game with CJ Anderson and wide receiver Emanuel Sanders. For the Panthers tight end is one of the leagues best. Running game wise the Panthers are led by Johnathan Stewart just over nine hundred yards total and backup Fozzy Whitaker. Receiver Ted Ginn is one of the games fastest receivers and is always a threat if given the opportunity.

If quarterback Peyton Manning gets good protection this could be the Broncos day Cam Newton needs to have a big day in order to defeat the experienced Broncos. Prediction Denver by a field goal.

It was also announced Friday that last years Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady will attend the game and accept his MVP award for last season.

BC Eagles Optimistic For 2016 Football Campaign

With the 2015 football season over the BC Eagles can only be optimistic as the 2016 spring workouts are just around the corner. The Eagles finished a disappointing 3-9 and 0-8 in the ACC.In order for BC to be competitive the offense has to move the ball better. The Eagles had the best defense in the nation only to have one of the worst total offense with just over 3000 total yards both passing and rushing.

The Eagles started out the 2015 season with a bang enjoying a short lived undefeated season with wins over Maine and Howard. But Maine and Howard aren’t nearly as competitive as Miami and Clemson.

The Eagles suffered early season injuries to number one signal caller Darius Wade who went down with a knee injury after the third game.Wade was replaced by sopomore quarterback Truy Flutie. Flutie the nephew of former great Doug Flutie  made a considerable impression on the coaching staff while filling in for Wade

The Eagles have  only thirteen seniors on it’s 2016 roster. Notable returnee’s are qb Darius Wade, qb Jeff Smith, qb John Fadule running back Myles Willis who was also injured and junior receiver Thaddeus Smith. The Eagles will have fierce competition at quarterback with a healthy Wade returning.

Like any other sport the Eagles need to stay healthy in 2016 0-8 record within your conference is un acceptable. The Eagles are young and need to believe in themselves. Their defense should still be one of the top three in the country. But they need to score a lot more than 3000 total yards if their expected to even be competitive.

The Eagles announced this week that Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles will transfer to BC this fall. Towles played in fourteen games for the Wildcats in 2014 but was benched for reasons unknown . The Eagles also announced that the team will lose three players on this years roster who elected to transfer to other schools.

Dombrowsk’s Off Season Shopping List Still Unfinished

As mid January of the new year is upon us Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski’s shopping list is still unfinished. First the signing of free agent David Price to a seven year deal was good but not enough.

Second year man Eduardo Rodriguez did an admirable job but was only up for three quarters of the season. Certainly not long enough to be counted on as a second starter. After that it’s Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly, and of course Clay Buchholz. Buchholz had his usual half a season but went down with a mid season arm injury. But for thirteen million a year that makes him attractive  to any team and that s the exact reason why the Sox hang on to him. The next area the bullpen long time closer Koji Uehara should come to camp healthy. But Dombrowski added ex Padre closer Craig Kimbrell to be the closer and also picked up ex Mariner Conner Smith as a setup man. If both can pitch in Fenway then Dombrowski hit a home run.

As for the offense the Sox have a couple of red flags to deal with. First Hanley Ramirez’s four year eighty eight million dollar contract. The  experiment in left field failed which leaves first base or DH as the only two options left. Ramirez has weight issues and his work ethic is questionable. If he comes to spring training overweight the Sox may have only one option and would be to designate him for reassignment. After Ramirez is third base man Pablo Sandoval Sandoval signed a whopping long term contract but his performance was not even close to his worth. His eleven home runs and forty some rbi’s is certainly not worth a long term deal. The Sox would be far better off platooning  super sub Brock Holt and  second. year man Travis Shaw. Shaw showed good versatility by playing both third and first and has a nice swing for Fenway Park. For the money the Sox would be far better off with Holt and Shaw both are versatile and hustle.

Their’s still plenty of time for GM Dombrowski to make some more moves. Preferably for a right handed second starter.Signing Price and Kimbrell was good but not even close to competing against the Yankee’s. The Yankees’s last week obtained left handed flame thrower Orlandis Chapman from the Reds. GrantevChapman has off field issues but also has been clocked at 104mph.

Leadership Is The Key To Celtics Success in 2015/16

With five games into the 2015 NBA season Celtic fans have gotten a glimpse of Danny Ainge’s  two number one draft picks. Guards Terry Rozier and Georgia product RJ  Hunter are the two newest Celtics to wear the Celtic green. But the real question is which one will be the more successful in a Celtic uniform or if they will stay in a Celtic uniform.

Celtic fans know that GM Danny Ainge isin’t afraid to pull the trigger on any deal to make the Celtics better. We saw that with the departure of greats Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett not to mention Ray Allen. This is where the term professional comes in. It’s way to early for fans to judge Rozier and Hunter but Pierce and Garnet certainly left their mark in Boston sports.

Celtic fans have been spoiled over the years with great leaders such as Bird, Parrish and McHale. Antoine Walker was a decent leader in the mid nineties. But from 1997 on the Celtics were led by Paul Pierce and later Kevin Garnet and Ray Allen. The three teamed up to deliver us banner number 17.

This is where these new Celtics Olynyk, Sullenger and Zeller need to do. They must step it up and be examples for rookies such as Rozier and Hunter not to mention Jordan Mickey. Olynyk is having a decent early NBA career but doesn’t come close to Pierces persona. Neither does Sullenger or or Tyler Zeller. Garnet and Allen and Pierce were great in the clutch.

The Celtics have an energetic and sharp coach in Brad Stevens. But if the Celtics don’t show signs of maturity and start winning big playoff games it will only be a matter of time before the jury starts pointing fingers and start looking for a scapegoat. This is where the Celtic fans have been blessed by great players and coaching. Time will tell if banner number 18 is in sight.

A Farrell Return Could Prove Costly For Sox in 2016

With the recent announcement by the Red Sox that John Farrell will return as manager could be a risky proposition. In five season as a major league manager Farrell has finished fourth twice with Toronto  that included one five hundred season and one world title in”13 with the Red Sox.The other years were three seasons of last place in the AL East.

This could truly prove to be a margin of error for the Sox. With a pretty good stretch run since he went down with cancer the Sox have some promising arms and talent to compete. Eduardo Rodriguez emerged as a dependable starter. Henry Owens could be a number two or three.Rookie Brian Johnson is still developing and could be ready by mid season.

With the emergence of center fielder Mookie Betts, Outfielder Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley the Red Sox have a good reason to be excited. Not to mention shortstop Xander Bogarts who is emerging as one of the best shortstops in the league. With the youth movement in place Farrell may or may not screw up the nucleus. Farrell had an infortunate incident in June with lefty Wade Miley. The two had a shouting contest in the dugout this shows clearly lack of control.

With attractive free agents available this off season the Sox clearly have to add an ace in order for Farrell to succeed.Clay Buchholz failed as a number one and couldn’t be counted on as a stopper. Other notable free agents are Matt Harvey, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzia and of course David Price. Price is an attractive player who has a working relationship with Dombrowski in their Detroit days. Price however is thirty four and is 1-5 in post season His only win was the AL champioship with the Rays.

A Dustin Pedroia trade would be gutsy. Perhaps to Oakland for Sonny Gray who has one year left on his deal. Considering Gray’s age and the Red Sox philosophy Gray would an area worth exploring. Matt Harvey on the other hand is signed through 2016 and is arbitration eligible in 2019. Harvey is a Scott Boras client. Samardzia is thirty years old and makes 12 million a year. Samardzia being thirty and his salary would not make sense for the Sox

This leaves us with the bullpen. The Sox bull pen was so so at best. Koji Uehars went down midseason and is forty years old. Robbie Ross did excellent finishing with five saves. Jean Machi was up and down.. Juniinchi Tazawa was overused towards the end. If Farrell is going to succeed the Sox need fresh arms out of the pen or else it will be another dismal season.DH wise David Ortitz is another area of concern. Travis Shaw a midseason callup has a nice stroke and has the durability to play third. Chris Davis is a free agent who should be considered. He’s just thirty years old and makes 12million dollars a year. He has the perfect swing for Fenway Park. A nice alternative considering Ortitz’s age.

No matter what happens in the off season the success of the 2016 team hinges on the moves the GM makes. This could make or brake Farrells tenure in Boston.

BC Eagles Improve to 3-1 On Young Season

The Boston College Eagles improved to 3-1 with a 17-14 win over the Huskies of Northern Illinois in Chestnut Hill. The Huskies gave the Eagle defense all it could handle but in the end it was BC who came away with the victory. In four games this season the Eagle defense has allowed a total of just ten points. The Eagles gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown and a FSU touchdown in BC’s only loss thus far are the only scores the Eagles have given up all season.

Freshman quarterback Troy Flutie threw for a twenty seven yard touchdown pass in his first career start. Running back John Hilliman ran for a twenty one yard score for BC’s offensive punch.

With Saturdays win BC stays in fourth place in the ACC division. The Eagles are behind NC State, Clemson and Syracuse. All three teams are undefeated. Saturday BC meets the Bluedevils of Duke are are also 3-1. Duke is also in fourth place in the tough Coastal conference behind the Hurricanes of Miami.

Look for Troy Flutie to remain as BC’s starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. Number one signal caller Darius Wade is out for the season with a broken ankle.

Notable Duke players to keep an eye on are safety Jeremy Cash.

Julian Needs To Recognize Young Talent For 2015 Bruins

With the 2015 NHL training camp underway for the Boston Bruins their’s no doubt that head coach Claude Julian has a short leash. The Bruins said good bye to long time GM Peter Chiralli right after the 2015 season. The Bruins failed to make the playoffs and were eliminated a year earlier by the Canadiens.

Time will tell how successful this years team will be. The Bruins traded long time veteran Milan Lucic to the Kings as well as defenseman Dougie Hamilton. With salary a definite issue Hamilton was probably the teams best and healthiest defenseman. Earlier this week it was announced that veteran defenseman Dennis Seidenberg will undergo back surgery and will be out six to eight weeks. With that said that leaves thirty eight year old Zedeno Chara carrying the load. After that theirs injury prone Adam McQuaid, young Torey Krug, Zach Trotman , Joe Morrow, Jakub Zobril Kevan and Collin Miller and free agent Matt Irwin fighting it out for the fifth and sixth spots.

If the Bruins are going to be successful this year Julian is going to have to be patient with second year players David Pasternak, center Ryan Spooner, and Seth Griffith al showed flashes of brilliance last year but can they do it night in and night out in the NHL. Julian was heavily criticized last season for the way he  handled  his young players. If the Bruins are going to have a winning season the young Bruins will have to step it up. The Bruins added ex Duck and left winger Matt  Beleskey to add some scoring punch from the left side. This was one of the weaker areas for the Bruins last season. Also the Bruins acquired ex Panther and rugged right winger Jimmy Hayes to the lineup.

Goaltending seems to be an area of strength for the Bruins. Long time net minder Tukka Rask returns for another season. The question is can Rask carry the tea for the season and hopefully the playoffs. Rask isregarded as one of the leagues top goalies. If Rask gets hurt the B’s have young Malcom Subban and Zane Mcintyre in Providence.

Theirs no doubt that Claude Julians leash is short. But the Bruins will need a lot of factors in order for the bteam to reach the playoffs. The Bruins need to regain their identity of four years ago and play like Bruins.

Eagles Undefeated Season Comes To An End

The Boston College Eagles undefeated season was short lived Friday night as the Eagles fell 14-0 to Florida State. Both defenses were stellar but in the end it was the Seminoles who walked away victorius. The Eagles held the Seminoles scoreless for the first fifty minutes of the game.

BC then took over but Seminole defensive back Jalen Ramsey scopped up a BC fumble and ran it into the endzone.Florida States head coach Jimbo Fisher was pleased with his teams defensive performance but had concerns regarding his offense. Fisher stated that to many balls were dropped and the inexperience of the offensive line showed. The Seminoles got a great performance from defensive back Jalen Ramsey.

BC however had no punch offensively as the Seminoles defense shutdown the Eagles passing and running game. The Eagles still got decent performance from tailback Tyler Rouse. The Eagles couldn’t do anything with the air attack.

The 2-1 Eagles next opponent the Huskies of Northern Illinois Saturday in Chestnut Hill. The Huskies are also noted for a strong defense as they fell to Ohio State last week 20-13. Head coach Rod Carey’s Huskies gave the Buckeyes all they could handle.

BC will definitely have it’s work cut out for them this weekend. The Eagles need a complete game from all areas of the club offense, defense and special teams if the Eagles want to come away with a win. The Eagles now have a quarterback issue facing the team sophomore signal caller Darius Wade went down with a broken ankle Saturday and will miss the remainder of the season. The Eagles have freshman Jeff Smith and Troy Flutie in reserve.

Patriots Must Bring Their A Game Against Bills in Buffalo

The New England Patriots will get their first of two looks against the highly rated Buffalo Bills . The Bills are receiving a lot of hype from ESPN after it’s 27-14 win over the Colts last week. The Bills are one of few teams expected two challenge the Super Bowl Champs. Both teams have great defenses, great coaching but the edge has to go to the Patriots simply  because of future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.

The Bills are blessed with a young energetic quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. Taylor had a monsterous season opener last week against the highly respected Indianapolis Colts. The Bills performance Sunday was ranked ninth by ESPN power rankings. The Bills haven’t been in a playoff game since 1999 since then the Patriots have won 14 division titles six conference championships and four super bowls.

The great thing about this game Sunday is it’s going to be coached by two great coaches. Ryan brings energy and persona to a team who was resurrected  last year as Buffalo came on strong finishing 9-7 Buffalo’s strength is obviously its defense notably the pass rush. Buffalo will have a healthy Marcell Darius back as well as a healthy Aaron Williams. Not to mention Jerry Hughes and Kyle Williams.

But the surprise of Buffalos team is it’s quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor had a great pre season edging out last years starter EJ Manuel and off season pickup Matt Cassel. The Bills also have a strong run game in free agent signing Leshaun McCoy. McCoy ‘s signing meant the release of long time Bill nine year veteran Fred Jackson. Jackson had some of his best games in his nine year Bill career against the Pats.

For New England this is a crucial early season game. A Buffalo win could really fuel Buffalo’s momentum going forward. New England was dominant last week in it’s 28-24 win over the Steelers. With a healthy Gronkowski and the duo of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady the Patriots are still the team to beat in the AFC.

Young BC Eagles Ready to Kickoff 2015 Campaign Saturday Against Maine

Saturday marks a new season for the BC Eagles as their 2015 seasons kicks off against the Black Bears of Maine. The young Eagles with only nine seniors on its rosters square off against another young team in Jack Cosgroves Black Bears.

The Eagles led by sophmore  quarterback Darius Wade take on a Black Bears team that was second in the Colonial Athletic Association conference. The Black Bears also finished strong winning its last three out of four games last year. But head coach Steve Addazio well prepared against a very well coached Black Bears team .Even though the teams are in two different conferences the Eagles have no intention of taking the Bears lightly.

BC is young and eager the Eagles have a solid backfield led by running back John Hillman. Wade is a year older and a year more experienced.Look for Wade to have a solid season led by his leadership skills. On defense the Eagles re led by senior middle linebacker Steven Daniels. Overall Eagles fans should be excited about this years  young  competitive squad.

BC fans will tell by the end of September how the Eagles will finish up this campaign. The Eagles have the Black Bears Saturday followed by Howard, Northern Illinois and Florida State.Success will depend on a healthy Eagle team and playing smart not getting any foolish penalties. It should be a very exciting season.
